'I want a break from public service,' Kamala Harris

In her first interview since leaving the vice presidency, former Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris shared her reasons for not running for governor of California. Speaking with Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show," Harris expressed her desire to take a break from political office after years of service, citing a broken American political system.

Harris revealed that she plans to travel across the country as a private citizen to engage with Americans. This interview followed her recent announcement that she would not enter the California governor's race next year. Having previously served as California's attorney general and a U.S. senator, she had been considering a run after returning to Los Angeles in January.

During the conversation, she also discussed her upcoming memoir, "107 Days," which reflects on her brief and intense presidential campaign after President Biden stepped down as the Democratic nominee last summer, leaving her with less than four months to campaign.

When Colbert inquired if her decision not to run for governor was due to plans for another office, Harris clarified that it was not the case. “For now, I don’t want to go back in the system,” she stated. “I want to travel the country, listen to people, and engage without it being transactional, where I’m asking for their vote.”

Colbert expressed concern over her comments about the broken political system, to which Harris responded, “Well, but it’s also evident, isn’t it? But it doesn’t mean we give up.”

Harris also shared that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, had taken a break from the news for months after her departure from office, humorously noting that she preferred watching cooking shows instead. She emphasized the importance of reminding those feeling disheartened about their power and ability to effect change.
