Wayne Rooney hits back at Tom Brady: ‘I don’t think he really understood football’


Wayne Rooney has responded to Tom Brady regarding remarks made in a recent documentary that portrays their brief collaboration at Birmingham.


In the documentary Built In Birmingham: Brady & The Blues, the renowned NFL quarterback and seven-time Super Bowl champion expresses concern about Rooney's work ethic during his tenure as manager. "I’m a little worried about our head coach’s work ethic," Brady mentions to his business manager, Ben Rawitz. "I mean, I don’t have great instincts on that."

This follows a tense interaction between Rooney, a five-time Premier League champion and Manchester United's all-time leading scorer, and Brady prior to a meeting with the team. Rooney was dismissed after achieving only two victories in 15 matches. Brady was present at the Blues’ training facility in his role as a minority owner and advisor to the majority owner, Tom Wagner.


He stated: "I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game when the schedule is typically lighter, and I don’t think he fully grasped the nuances of football. However, what he does comprehend is that he is a diligent worker – that much is clear."


Rooney defended his brief tenure in Birmingham, asserting: "When I arrived at Birmingham, the situation was quite dire. This explains why the players were not equipped to advance the club. You had Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett following me, both of whom faced similar challenges."


Brady is also noted to describe Birmingham players from the 2023-24 relegation season as "lazy and entitled."
